Haywood Drive is an established neighbourhood in the Hertfordshire town of Hemel Hempstead. This part of Hemel Hempstead is characterised by the integration of heathland, woodland and water meadows into the small developments, which lead from the countryside into the town centre.

The Residents were concerned by an application for a large, architect designed house which would sit on stilts within an area of incidental woodland at the gateway to their cul-de-sac.

Varsity Town Planning acted for the family who lived adjacent to the proposed development and the woodland.

We undertook a detailed site visit, researching the site, engaging with local residents and considering the environmental impact of the proposal. Following this it was clear that an objection to the scheme was reasonable and justified.

We prepared a set of objections based on:

  • 50% site coverage
  • Bulky design
  • Incongruous design of an ‘eco-treehouse’ in an otherwise traditional development
  • Tree removal
  • Access concerns
  • Overlooking and loss of light for the neighbouring property
  • Out of date ecological information

Dacorum Borough Council went on to refuse the application.

On behalf of our clients, we engaged further with the appeal process, the outcome of which is pending.
